MCC student Larissa Roy has a passion for performing

Larissa Roy is passionate about performing arts.

When she graduates next spring from Greenville High School, she will be one year closer to her dream of becoming a choir teacher. That鈥檚 because she will have earned nearly a year鈥檚 worth of college credits through dual enrollment at 麻豆映画传媒.

Dual enrollment allows students to take up to 10 college classes throughout their high school career. Successful completion of a college course grants them college credit as well as satisfies one of their high school graduation requirements.

Roy said taking college classes while she鈥檚 in high school has helped her grow as a student and learn what is needed to be successful in college courses.

鈥淒ual enrollment has been great for me,鈥 Roy said. 鈥淚t has taught me to be more self-sufficient and study differently. It is definitely preparing me for that next level of instruction after high school.鈥

Since first enrolling at MCC as a sophomore, Roy has taken classes in English, psychology, art appreciation, film, sign language and mathematics. Her preferred format is online, but she also has taken an in-person class.

鈥淲hen I am done, I will have a whole year of college for free,鈥 she said.

In addition to college coursework, Roy is active in a variety of performing arts activities at GHS and in the community. She is a member of three of the GHS choral ensembles, serves as captain of the Village Green Singers, performs in the Yellow Jacket Theater, and serves on the Advisory Board of the Hans Christian Anderson Theater (HCAT). She is also a member of the National Honor Society and the current Miss Danish Festival.

After high school, Roy plans to transfer to Central Michigan University or Grand Valley State University to study music education and minor in dance. In addition to pursuing a career as a choir teacher, Roy is interested in working with local community theaters.

鈥淚 think performing arts is very important,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 think it should be accessible to everybody in public schools.鈥

Roy recommends dual enrollment to all high schoolers.

鈥淚 would definitely say, 鈥榙o it,鈥欌 she said. 鈥淚t saves you time and money later and prepares you for college.鈥
