New MCCF scholarship honors Martin Lund
In many ways, Martin Lund would be proud of how his legacy is impacting the lives of others at ΒιΆΉΣ³»΄«Γ½.
Known as Marty to friends and family, he passed away in July 2021. He is the late husband of Lisa Lund, the executive director of the ΒιΆΉΣ³»΄«Γ½ Foundation.
In July, Lisa established the MCC Foundation Martin L. Lund Memorial Scholarship to help students for years to come at MCC.
Marty, who resided in Sheridan with his family, was a later in life student with a GED who always felt a call to Christian counseling. The opportunity arose to attend MCC after he and Lisa were married. He graduated from MCC in 2001 and went on to earn his bachelorβs degree from Grand Valley State University and his masterβs degree in social work from Western Michigan University. After working in different mental health organizations, his final position was as a licensed therapist at Community Hope Christian Counseling Center in Greenville.
Marty originally shared his MCC story in 2017.
βI always wanted to go back to school, but I didnβt have the time, money or dedication to work toward earning a college degree. Once I got married, though, it became easier to go back to school and pursue my passion,β he said.
Lisa spoke of the importance of his educational journey.
βHe felt education was very important and it took a great deal of persistence to achieve his career goal,β Lisa said. βHe got his start here and he would want to help others start their journey.β
During his time at MCC, he took challenging courses and joined the Alpha Tau Alpha Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society.
MCC remained important to Marty years after he graduated.
βMCC is still a focal point in our lives,β he said. βMy wife, Lisa, works there; we have gone on the trip to Stratford; and our daughter, Hannah, has attended summer camps and Heritage Festival. We support and promote MCC because it so important to the community.β
Lisa talked about her hopes for what this scholarship will offer to MCC students.
βI hope this scholarship removes barriers for students and gives them hope and support needed to achieve their goals, regardless of the stage of life they begin at MCC,β she said. βIt is never too late to go after your dreams. Just start where you are.β
