Μύ

Are you a high school senior who is not quite ready for college?

No worries. This summer, you can get paid to take a class at ΒιΆΉΣ³»΄«Γ½ that will help you get ready. That’s right!

The Success Express at ΒιΆΉΣ³»΄«Γ½ will focus on what you need to know to be successful in college. During this five-week class, you will boost your skills in English and mathematics, explore college resources, learn valuable life skills, participate in team-building exercises, go on field trips and more!

Here’s the deal. Only 34 students will be accepted into MCC’s Success Express class, which runs June 12 through June 29 and July 10 through July 20, Mondays through Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the college’s Sidney ΒιΆΉΣ³»΄«Γ½.

As a student in this class, you will get:

  • $50 per week in gas cards to use toward transportation costs.
  • $500 cash that will be paid out to you over five weeks.
  • A laptop computer valued at approximately $700, which will be yours to keep upon successful completion of the course.
  • Three college credits for MCC’s GNST100 class to apply toward a certificate or degree at MCC, upon successful completion of the course.
  • Classroom supplies.
  • Free breakfast and lunch each day.

MCC Language Arts and Humanities Instructor Greta Skogseth, who is leading the MCC Success Express, said the program is funded by the State of Michigan and is administered by the Michigan Community College Association to support community college’s efforts to combat learning loss among recent high school graduates who experiences interruptions to in-person learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

β€œAs we are kind of post-COVID, we find many students need to connect on a personal level that not only supports their academics, but also brings them together socially with other students,” Skogseth said.

MCC Student Success Counselor Tore Skogseth said the class aims to engage students to overcome barriers to achieve their educational dreams.

β€œThere’s a sense of personal responsibility. You can’t control everything that happens to you, but you can take control of how you respond to it,” he said. β€œYou can take control of your life.”

With limited seats available, you are urged to apply soon at montcalm.edu/success-express. The application will remain open until all seats are filled.
